Montréal, October 3, 2016 – The 12th edition of the Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF), created by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, announced its prize winners at the Festival’s closing ceremonies on Sunday October 2, at Concordia Theatre Hall. Winners were selected by a professional jury:

Feature-length films, fictions: Kristian Hodko, actor and scriptwriter; Marie-Évelyne Lessard, actress; Michael Challenger, actor, dancer, founder of Anu Productions

Feature-length films, documentaries: Honey A. Dresher, president of Culture. Diversity, Communications; Carel Pedre, producer, radio, and television host; Jérôme Pruneau, doctor of social and cultural anthropology (ethnology), director general of Diversité artistique Montréal (DAM)

Medium-length and short films: Phyllis Gooden, actress; Caesey Shakes, scriptwriter and director; Jhonattan Ardila, actor and director

Members of the juries evaluated excellent films from around the globe according to a set of selection criteria. While all films were outstanding, the following really stood out:

BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE: Black, by Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah (Belgium)
Honourable mentions to: Bois d’ébène, by Moussa Touré (Senegal, France)

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: Maya Angelou and still I rise, by Bob Hercules, Rita Coburn Whack (USA)
Honourable mention to: Sembene, by Samba Gadjigo, Jason Silverman (Sénégal, États-Unis)

BEST NARRATIVE SHORT: Adorn, by Elizabeth Melanson, Mouna Traoré (Canada)
Honourable mention to: High Hoops, by Tanner Jarman (USA)

The 12th Montreal International Black Film Festival, created by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, was held from September 28 to October 2, 2016. The 13th annual MIBFF will be held from September 27 to October 1st, 2017.
