CUTHBERT'S SILENCE

By Marion Lary

With Marion Lary, Director

Cuthbert, a microcosm of relations between Blacks and Whites in a Georgia's rural town. When I was 18, I spent a year in Cuthbert, a little rural georgian town, deep in the American Bible Belt. I was white, young, naive and terribly upset by the racism which underlied relations both on campus and in town. Shy and fragile, I dove into silence. Forty years later, overcoming my fears, I decided to go back to Cuthbert. A question haunted my mind, how do black and white people manage nowadays there ? Through Cuthbert’s silences I would like to investigate how memory impregnates and vivifies our belonging to a given society. Cuthbert’s silences is a journey against the weight of time, against sclerotic forgetfulness
