For the 10th anniversary of International Black Film Festival of Montreal, the Fabienne Colas Foundation presents a retrospective of 6 feature and 5 short black independent Canadian films that had an impact on the festival because of their “politically incorrect” angle. This retrospective, Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, held in Montreal with the support of the International Black Film Festival of Montreal in Toronto but also with the support of Toronto Black Film Festival. Each screening will be followed by a talk with the director(s) to explain their creative process and the “politically incorrect” context to their work.

Three young Afro-Caribbean gays and lesbians living in Montreal explain how they had to face various preconceived ideas and stereotypes linked to homophobia and racism before they were able to assert themselves and their personalities.

BEYOND GAY: THE POLITICS OF PRIDE

Bob Christie – 2009, 87’, Documentary, English – with French subtitles

Before the 30th anniversary, Vancouver’s Gay Pride Parade director examines relevance of Pride celebrations internationally. He travels to places where Pride is steeped in protest to experience the powerful oppression that still exists. Pride is more than a parade; it’s a giant step on the road to equality.
