This project’s first edition was born in 2014 in Montreal and evolved in 2019 across 3 major Canadian cities (Montreal, Toronto and Halifax), with the generous support of the Canadian Council for the Arts, in collaboration with the Montreal Intl Black Film Festival (MIBFF), the Toronto Black Film Festival (TBFF) and the Halifax Black Film Festival (HBFF).

Filmmakers addressed the issue of social integration of people from black communities in Canada through films. The 15 films will be presented as world premiere via 3 screenings followed by talks to discuss the socio-economic issues and black realities in cinema and society, particularly their respective provinces and share possible solutions for better inclusion of black youth in the community.

“Being Black in Canada” enabled 15 young filmmakers, aged 18 to 30, from the black communities of Montreal, Toronto and Halifax to create 15 documentary shorts of 8 to 10 minutes each. The 15 promising filmmakers were guided through the many steps in audiovisual production (screenwriting, directing, editing, post-production, etc.) and creation of a documentary short (maximum 10 minutes). This process was carried out under the professional tutelage of industry professionals with professional equipment.

BEING BLACK IN CANADA
Part of the Fabienne Colas Foundation Youth & Diversity Program
Supported by Canada Council for the Arts

BEING BLACK IN MONTREAL
Marina Mathieu, F
Alexa Carrenard, Le dilemme de Ma’
Justice Rutikara , Le Muzungu québécois
Stella Lemaine, Prendre sa lumière
Sara-Claudia Ligondé, Rest is a right

BEING BLACK IN TORONTO
Sharine Taylor, Tallawah Abroad
Adrian Wallace, Black Sun
Yasmin Evering-Kerr, The Onyx Butterfly
Valerie Amponsah, Joseph and Margaret
Omolola Ajao, YYZ
Yvano Wickham-Edwards, #BLACK

BEING BLACK IN HALIFAX
Francesca Ekwuyasi, Black and Belonging
Latesha Auger, Journey of self-love
Bradley Bright, Normal
Harmony Adesola, Youth, Hip-Hop and Halifax

This pan-Canadian project Being Black in Canada was made possible thanks to the support of Fabienne Colas Foundation, Montreal Intl Black Film Festival, Toronto Black Film Festival, Halifax Black Film Festival, Canada Council for the Arts, Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec, Conseil des Arts de Montréal, l’inis, Oya Media, Patthway2industry, Screen Nova Scotia and Current Studios.

The 15th Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF), created by the Fabienne Colas Foundation and presented by Quebecor, will be held from September 24 to 29, 2019.

About the Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF)
Created in 2005 by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, the Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF) is currently the largest Canadian film festival entirely dedicated to black realities from all four corners of the world. It aims to offer the public the most spectacular productions in black cinema and debate the great cultural, social, and socio-economic issues facing society. The MIBFF goal is to promote the development of the independent film industry and showcase more films depicting black realities around the world. The festival seeks to prioritize local and international films that do not necessarily come under the spotlight, a new cinema that moves its audience and raises awareness – and a few eyebrows. In so doing, the MIBFF addresses issues and showcases art that makes you think and smile, provokes, bewilders, and shocks you – a new, fresh look at black cinema from all parts of the globe! www.montrealblackfilm.com
– 30 –

Media accreditation is currently accepting applicants here.

To learn more, please visit: www.montrealblackfilm.com

Get Social: #MIBFF19
Facebook.com/BlackFilmFestival | Twitter: @filmblackmtl | Instagram: @montrealblackfilmfest

For Media Inquiries:
Alex Nitsiou, Publicist | alex@raisondetremedia.ca | 514.443.3731
Talar Adam, Press Relations Coordinator | presse@MontrealBlackFilm.com | 514.833.0274

https://montrealblackfilm.com/en/being-black-in-canada/ BEING BLACK IN CANADA From the Fabienne Colas Foundation’s Youth & Diversity Program 15 emerging filmmakers from Montreal, Toronto, Halifax created their first short films through this program and will be screening them as World Premieres at the 15th Montreal Intl Black Film Festival Wednesday, Sept 25, 2019 | 7PM | Cinema du Parc […]

[8,7

post-13344","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-press-releases
["GET
