
{"id":2302,"date":"2015-09-28T16:24:14","date_gmt":"2015-09-28T21:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/montrealblackfilm.mysites.io\/?p=2302"},"modified":"2017-09-07T15:42:17","modified_gmt":"2017-09-07T15:42:17","slug":"viola-davis-makes-history-with-best-actress-in-drama-series-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montrealblackfilm.com\/en\/viola-davis-makes-history-with-best-actress-in-drama-series-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Viola Davis makes history with best actress in drama series win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Source : <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2015\/sep\/20\/emmys-2015-viola-davis-best-actress-drama-first-woman-of-color\" target=\"_blank\">TheGuardian.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/viola-davis\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Viola Davis<\/a>, the star of How to Get Away with Murder, made history at the 67th Emmy awards on Sunday night, becoming the first woman of color to win the Emmy for best actress in a drama series.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity,\u201d Davis said when accepting the award. \u201cYou cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In her speech, Davis began by quoting<a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2015\/jun\/18\/noteworthy-woman-to-feature-on-10-bill-us-treasury-announces\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\"> the civil rights activist Harriet Tubman<\/a>. \u201cIn my dreams and visions,\u201d said the actor, whose voice was charged with emotion, \u201cI seemed to see a line, and on the other side of that line were green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white ladies, who stretched out their arms to me over the line, but I couldn\u2019t reach them no-how.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Davis went on to thank the showrunners, writers and producers who have created roles for black women in television. \u201cSo here\u2019s to all the writers, the awesome people that are Ben Sherwood, Paul Lee, Peter Nowalk, Shona Rhimes &#8211; people who have redefined what it means to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She then paid tribute to other actresses of colour including Taraji P Henson, Scandal star Kerry Washington, Meagan Goods and Halle Berry: \u201cThank you for taking us over that line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was Davis\u2019s first nomination for the Shonda Rhimes show on <a class=\" u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/abc\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">ABC<\/a>.
