CONFERENCE WITH SPIKE LEE AT THE OPENING NIGHT GALA

Spike Lee like you've never heard him before in Montreal! A privileged moment with the legendary director of Do the right thing, She’s gotta have it, Malcolm X and Blackkklansman.

Coinciding with 35 years since the release of Do the Right Thing and celebrating his 45-year career, the Montreal Intl Black Film Festival is presenting an Intimate Conversation with Spike Lee at its Opening Night Gala on September 25, 2024, 7:30 p.m. at L’Olympia. The conversation will follow a video retrospective of Lee’s career showcasing his outstanding contribution to the film industry and his consistent pursuit of redefining the role of Black talent off and on screen.

Academy Award Winner Spike Lee has significantly shaped the future of cinema by pushing the boundaries of innovation, exploring diverse genres and forms, and tackling thought-provoking subjects that challenge and disrupt the status quo. He has transformed the landscape of independent cinema and redefined the role of Black talent in the film industry. His movies are bold sociopolitical commentaries that challenge cultural assumptions, addressing not only race but also class and gender identity.

An intimate conference where Spike Lee will also discuss his pollical views on what will be a historic U.S. election with potentially the first Black Woman President: Kamala Harris; his journey as a filmmaker, writer, actor and producer; his take and advice on filmmaking; how he sees the future of Black films and diversity off/on screen; as well as his view on today's social-economic issues.

Moderator: Fabienne Colas, MBA – Recipient of the Doctorate honoris causa from Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, and named Canada’s Top 40 under 40, Fabienne Colas is an actress, filmmaker, producer and entrepreneur. She is also the president and founder of 12 arts and film festivals including the Montréal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF).
