The film “Inspired by Mandela” is a poignant tribute to the vision and resilience of Nelson Mandela, told through the creation of a unique citizen collection within the Afromuseum. This cinematic work highlights the Afromuseum's pre-launch event, held on September 4 and 5, 2021, which resulted in an iconic collection of 27 works of art, symbolizing Mandela's 27 years of imprisonment.

Through paintings, music, dance, song, poetry, slam and moving interviews, the film captures the collective energy and inspiration of the artists and citizens gathered for this special occasion. The creative process behind the design of the 26 paintings and the collaborative installation, highlights the importance of art as a means of resistance, memory and social transformation.

The event, which took place six months before the Afromuseum's official opening on February 24, 2022, is presented as a moment of communion and reflection, where Mandela's legacy was revisited and reinterpreted through diverse artistic expressions. The film features the artists in action, capturing their emotions, challenges and triumphs as they work together to honor Mandela's spirit.

The documentary not only shows the creation of the works but also contextualizes their significance within the Afromuseum's mission: to celebrate and preserve Afro-descendant art and culture. Through testimonials from participants and spectators, the film highlights the impact of this initiative on the community and its role in promoting cultural diversity and social justice.

The film screening will be followed by a free guided tour entitled “Discovering the Peoples of Africa” through the Traditional African Arts exhibition at the Afromusée.
