Montreal, August 3, 2011 – The newspaper Le Point called it THE summer comedy of 2011. Two weeks after its opening, close to a million French movie goers had bought a ticket for this motion picture event. The North American premiere of Fabrice Eboué’s, Thomas Ngijol’s and Lionel Steketee’s CASE DÉPART will launch the 7th edition of the Montreal International Black Film Festival, on September 22.
CASE DÉPART (Back to Square One), an explosive comedy about slavery, follows two half brothers: Joel (Thomas Ngijol) and Regis (Fabrice Eboué) who, called at their father’s deathbed in the Antilles, receive as sole inheritance the emancipation act that freed their slave ancestors. Not caring much about the document’s symbolic value, they tear it up. As punishment for this act, a mysterious aunt decides to send them back in time to experience slavery. Catapulted to 1780, they’re sold on the slave market. The 2 brothers will have to join forces, not only to flee the plantation, but to find a way to get back home to the 21st century.
The Nouvel Observateur called the Jamel Comedy Club’s 2 most provocative comedians, Thomas Ngijol’s and Fabrice Eboué’s first feature film, CASE DÉPART, “a hot comedy reminiscent of Molière.” Not only do the 2 comics star in this movie, but they wrote the screenplay together and co-directed the film with Lionel Steketee.
Fabrice Éboué
Is a regular at the Jamel Comedy Club. He’s been doing irreverent standup routines all over Paris and Quebec since 2000. His one-man shows Alleluia! and Envers et contre tout! were major hits in Paris.
Thomas Ngijol
This new talent, who’s part of the new generation of French comedians, was discovered at the Jamel Comedy Club. Two years after having charmed the audiences of the Théâtre de 10 Heures for close to 6 months, he’s now one of the most promising comics in France.
After its North American premiere at the Montreal International Black Film Festival, CASE DÉPART, distributed by K-Films Amérique, will hit Quebec screens starting October 7, 2011.
About the Montreal International Black Film Festival – MIBFF
Presented by Global Montreal, the Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF) was created in 2005 by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Cinema, Art and Culture. The mission of the Montreal International Black Film Festival is to stimulate the development of the independent film industry and to encourage more films on the realities of Blacks from around the world. The Festival wants to promote a different kind of cinema, cinema that hails from here and from abroad and that does not necessarily have the opportunity to grace the big screen, groundbreaking cinema that moves us, that raises awareness and that takes us all by surprise. The MIBFF wants to deal with issues and present works that raise questions, that provoke, that make us smile, that leave us perplexed, that shock us… A fresh new look at black cinema from the four corners of the globe! www.montrealblackfilm.com.
