Le parcours de Souleymane Cissé est pour le moins impressionnant. Il n’a que sept ans quand il commence à s’intéresser au cinéma. Après des études secondaires à Dakar, il revient au Mali en 1960, au moment où le pays prend son indépendance. C’est alors que survient pour lui la révélation, à l’occasion de la projection d’un documentaire sur l’arrestation de Patrice Lumumba : il fera du cinéma. Il décroche une bourse et part à Moscou, où il sera projectionniste, puis cinéaste.

En 1970, il est engagé comme caméraman par le ministère de l’Information malien. Deux ans plus tard, il réalise Cinq jours d’une vie, primé au Festival de Carthage. La sortie de son premier long métrage, Den Muso (La Fille), mené à bien grâce à la coopération française, relate l’histoire d’une jeune fille muette, violée puis rejetée par sa famille ; il est interdit au Mali et vaudra à Souleymane Cissé d’être emprisonné.

Ses films, Baara (Le Travail), et Finyé (Le Vent), tous deux récompensés par l’Etalon de Yenenga au Fespaco seront mieux accueillis. Mais c’est Yeelen (La Lumière), Prix du Jury à Cannes en 1987, qui le révélera enfin au grand public et qui est étudié au Baccalauréat français 2011-2013 par la section cinéma et audiovisuel.

Souleymane Cissé a été membre de plusieurs jurys dont celui de la sélection officielle du Festival de Cannes en 1983 et celui de la Cinéfondation du Festival de Cannes en 2006.

En 2011, il fait partie du jury du Festival Tribeca, fondé par de Robert De Niro.

Cinéaste engagé, Souleymane Cissé est président de l’Union des créateurs et entrepreneurs du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (UCECAO), dont il est en partie à l’origine. Il siège au conseil d’administration du World Cinema Foundation, créé par le réalisateur Martin Scorcese, pour la préservation et la restauration du patrimoine cinématographique mondial.

Le travail de Souleymane Cissé lui a permis d’être élevé au rang de Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Mali ; Officier de l’Ordre du Burkina Faso et Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres de France.

Souleymane Cissé est interviewé en avril 2011 par le réalisateur gagnant d’un Oscar Martin Scorcese au Tribeca Talks Series. Scorsese a découvert Yeelen, film de Cissé, tout à fait par hazard en zappant très tard un soir, et il le décrit comme « l’une des plus belles expériences cinématographiques de ma vie. »
